thank you for coming to our last check meeting I know that it's hard to get away but we appreciate you coming in front of you I put down the agenda and I gave you the minute so if you will take a take a second or two and read over that and let me know if there needs to be anything added or taken away hey everybody okay if I be good okay so if you were able to look at the auction if they wanted to meet with you all and discuss the topic of her that is not an easy topic we can't talk about it without making her head it's like a natural thing you talk about any of mediately Bev and I wanted to do that this could we were hoping a lot more everybody could be here to weigh in lead up to it and what it turns and we have Carolyn white here from the and she's going to talk to you every year we're faced with questions for the parents and from everybody wanting to know what we're doing about head lice what steps were taking first while we just always try to reiterate to the parents of this is not a Publix this is it's it's in the community I mean if you go to movie theater if you go out and eat if your head to head contact by hugging face 12K reach if you notice well Theodore Enfield Donna had said that he didn't say that years ago I always had long before we got vinyl chairs in the office because I've had this is literally like my oldest son says that he believes that he's bald because if I thought this is my stupidity back then if I thought that he had come in contact or whatever even though he never had a bad because I was freaked out my mom is I'm very whatever we've been going through and I'm researching for quite a while and fit what they want to be aware of is that according to American Academy of Pediatrics head lice is a nuisance but is not considered a communicable disease and it's not reportable to the health department there are many ways that you spread those from home to home and we look at that as hitchhiking this idea is not only does that include last but you have to also think of the other Savory things as roaches and bed bugs all our issues that no family want to deal with it's the nature of the Beast I mean it's just the times that were in they probably have always been around as it's just more we hear about it when we see it more it's more prevalent some of the facts about life and that they do not four hours okay they can't the body structure of lost does not allow them to jump or fly that's awful that's usually something that's parents sake is it just going to jump from this one to the other one state they can't do that they want to stay on their source of food and I'm sorry cuz you're eating but they can't crawl bars they can't call off of a person onto another person or fall off of them okay so which also have to think about they don't live on the roaches we have found them in occupied shoes friend so it's not just it's not it's not I'm sorry but it and I know you know if we don't do full classroom checks we check for anyone that has live lice or that has viable eggs that means that their fourth of an inch to the scalp they have to go home and then they have to be cleared in the clinic before they return a lot of times I'm going to go ahead and just stop here and let you connect over to your apartment and we asked her to come and addresses topic because she's gotten several phone calls from our parents and grandparents here in the community expressing concern about head lice so we thought that would be appropriate to bring her and let her discuss but to his family said I have received some phone calls from parents and grandparents in the last couple of months that are concerned and they're they're very irate he and I have to explain to them as I'm going to explain to you that the state of Texas the control or have any jurisdiction over head lice it's considered a social issue not a health issue there are no no diseases associated with other than topical infect topical infections due to scratching butt as far as the policy school that they recommend school district have is you know concerning no-nit policies in school is that but that is like so like last year well Studies have shown that that affects children in a negative way in several ways one it create the social stigma symptoms on the children that have life issues in their home and it's not their fault I can't do anything about that and two if they miss so many days of school they they missed it and then it and then it affects the school district's directly they say recommend that you not send the kid home even the day that it found you couldn't come at the end of the day as normal and you contact the parent at the end of the day and art regardless of what the outcome is at home for his treatment or not treatment that's how we supposed to be but it is for you no strongly encouraged to work with those parents that are having issue heard from the parents and Grandparents were that they can and so they say don't I have limited resources sometimes it really just requires consistent educate on Howard some of them are trying to use homeopathic or home remedies for the treatment and those are not proven to work and I know to look for them to work and and then if they argue they think that and then they think that when they see the child scratching you know a week later or even the next day I'm sick continue to work on the scalp for a few days after the initial treatment hey they see it a week later it probably still is at the Y from the medication that they used because it is okay I did it a cough the at the Y and said the kids scratching even two weeks later as a result of the medication reimplantation of life and then and then I don't tend to retreat appropriately a week or two later when they you know. They shouldn't just treat because it's Easter visual identification of insect that again is another factor with education with your staff and repair . the misidentification of what exactly is a child has on her scalp so they can have other other insects on on them that aren't white but they're they're misidentify so you know they're are all of you tend to be on your shrubs at roses and things like that on cases are going to buy the kids but so then I treat and approach Macy's something and it's they think it's a Wise Fool so it's very important that you properly identify the insect in the first place and then but then you don't the end of the day that's the state recommendation we have no authority over that but the recommendation for your your school district would be at the end of the day notified that parent and there are state laws rules governing that the parent of a child this is from the the state laws of affection 38.031 notice of life and it says that the boy I shall adopt a policy requiring the school nurse at a public elementary school German for otherwise becomes aware that a child enrolled in the school has life shall provide written or electronic notice one the parent of a child with life as soon as practical but not later than 48 hours after the administrator or nurse as applicable determines or becomes aware of that fact and the pear as the child with life not later than the 5th school day after the date on which the administrator or nurse for applicable determines or becomes aware of that fact so with that being said you know you can't wait until next week to notify mom or dad that's their child had life and you can't wait until next week to notify the the the Red Feather at parents in the classroom parents of that class not just not the whole school that just the parents of that not yet there's a dipping of the of the original another classroom then you would want to check that student but it is also not legal for you to for a nurse or a a a teacher routinely check a child based upon history okay because again that tends to stigmatize that child and life pain other kids labeled that child is a you know every time you get pulled out of the classroom if it's a negative, derogatory effect on the child so you can't do that but if you see signs such as scratching or you act he has something crawling on them you know when they're sitting next to me or something like that that is caused to how to do a course her parents and even if you didn't eat you know you start hearing the word lies and you start kind of freaking out so that the important thing is to and the public about what life is and and the fact that it's not us a health concern and the rest is that a social concern I know most of the time when the students have head lice so it's available over-the-counter and there's also a generic form in a listen to that Hunt County kids has graciously let us give the kids bouncers at Save Mart pharmacy and they pay for the medication lithium like one student in particular like they want to request it every time and that's not really what it's designed for you know it's designed to assist not take care of the whole problem but we even checked to see if they have Medicaid because a lot of times the parents control the doctor and say you know hey my kid has had lies can you call in a prescription most of them will not make them come into or that they'll go ahead and call that in so and then we do send home the informational packet with the kid about treatment and that. tell you who with the excessive absences that a lot of the kids it's the same little guys over and over and over and over and these babies fall very very behind and it is heartbreaking and you know you can just stay there the whole face just fall every time they get sent up and I've also I know when I was at the do I have to tell the teachers for that child before that family and the thing that we okay I used to teach that to my son I know it also talked to the parents about that reiterate to your children is at home teaching and unfortunately it's at school teacher protect your personal space yes please please don't list of power jackets up together fist bump instead of hugs went don't forget you don't get down and you can color for your heads land together almost so there's an the kids the upholstery furniture and the carpet and the stuffed animals I want to try. And they're not learning so obvious a spray that it smells like Licorice and it's not whenever I need but that was the only time get the get lice when it's going around in the classroom I don't know anything on a child at all and they just they won't let us you know the one thing that we do is we you know we would get the protect for them teaching and it's been talking to me and we and we know that but it's the things that that we would love to but it's teaching the teaching the families teaching our kids and you know any time is that I had the teachers come outside oh my gosh they were doing something in the Hat on you see I had drilled it into him anybody you do and I checked him all the because I that's just I was raised that way but would fit a lot of our kids are not so trying to think of a way to help the math have a question so you said that you were getting like complaints from parents like because the way the school is handing handling it complaints because they weren't you know what were they play back to school and get light bug do you know an egg hatch he notices you're letting the rest of the classes Ann and though I don't know if it says that the shampoo or if it's that you know the type of blood you have attractive 99% of head lice cases are in elementary schools that's the families and they think they know how to do it but they don't doing what they are doing basic on their memory of what they did ten years ago or what their parents did when they were going out or what they read on Facebook and so it's very important to get the right information out to the parents on treatment. so they need to check each other make sure that they treat everybody that is in Fair if that if someone in the family isn't infected then you don't need to as in you're just needlessly and producing a chemical to that person that is it necessary do you need to treat does not basic treatment of the environment cope bed linen of the pile of hay and then and vacuumed the carpet vacuumed the cost furniture do lice do not like they don't they don't sit on the dock so it is it is strictly at furniture for so long hours off of the head because they were closed ever so many hours before they die from starvation so get that bug is over there on that chair and everybody else over here it's hard now they will do in the winter time if they're actually we tend to have more static electricity in our Hangar and so when you have kids sitting close to each other and they have static electricity it might appear to jump because it's going from the hair that here by the electric from the electricity but they're not the results of the election then the spring time but like inanimate objects like cones and even jacket it's rare that you will from In-N-Out because again they don't just turn loose ends up the hair shaft and then from the Scout and stay on those jackets are on the cone I bet you can't even stick to account they can stick to the hair that's on the couch and if there's not any here on the couch if they're not going to I can't be transmitted from the come to another person unless there's already hair on the couch there aren't so again it's that head-to-head contact and you know small group like reading groups and play groups playing games and things like that so it's about education either we've had Parents talk about the carpet they get vacuum we have encouraged them not to have the clock things in the classroom just not because of the head lice but you also got to think of roaches and you got to take a bed bug anything that wants to borrow to be there so we have and of course teaching on their personal space like how things fit what we were proposing I don't know in Facebook jail all time we were made aware that we assess that child and their things and then from that point and they said they don't take things too from because it's not the kids fault and and we don't send them home in this or that right but we need to come up with a way that this child isn't singled out because he's got bad and their kids are mean an adult for me yes and so I know that I have in this is but I don't know if it would be feasible to ask like on a school supply list or whatever that a sealable tote clear tote with a steel be either purchase or whatever for each child in the classroom and I can either store to thunder their chair that away anything that they come in their jacket or coat the backpack goes in there at sealed done for the day and they only get in it when they need their stuff that way nothing's left out the kitten have to be going to another room to put their stuff being singled out that's horrible but that's the only thing that's the only thing that's the only thing we do what to do so far right the only other thing that we were thinking about is the clear backpack but as far as he knows the plastic or vinyl you know ask for those anything that not I have a huge backpack that has different pockets and you jumped all over it and it's all this mess and I'm too a ghost does not come in the house but we just went in and get comes down to and this is the hardest part for saving shovel this on the academic side not every parent does it the way that some of us would do it and just the dishwasher is honesty the last thing they're thinking about is taken care of lice or anything you're doing is trying to get water or so bad so I mean it's always a problem the thing that I hate is that you know we don't have to send them home you know and we don't or whatever to the end of the day but I agree like do not set them up in the office all day or in the nurse's office class do you know that part because at least when they're here they can get so you know services but then again if they have lot bugs then that's a problem braids and I was very clear if you do not like not so maybe where I see it you know who among a group if you know they're using the same hair brushes they're using the same ponytail holders Southeast is selfies that type thing you know asleep on the bus house from the basketball game you know it just continues and I'm paying some of the worst 2 and that we had because we're have the call and you know as far as the other District we've been doing it different than still been keeping it can a lot of these babies and all these babies as the only meals like yes or no and the only supervision they have is wondering and so is is if we see active head lice either love bugs or they're the dark Scout we called the parent and send them home the first time they're sent home for head lice they have to excuse days and each additional time they have one excuse what see most of the time if they're probably out a minimum of three to four days if they come back that week at all or you call a parent and you can't reach them and they're in the nurse's office the buses run being exposed to everything that says we can't get ahold of anybody so I did a poll with the other District nurses around our area to see if they send kids home when they die the issue or if they wait and send them home at the end of the day and then recheck them the next day so I'm the ones that I told Lone Oak and bowls were the only ones that go ahead and send them home upon finding head lice Farmersville Kaufman Land & Cattle do not send them home until the end of the day so you know that helps us on the attendance issue and helps the kid it helps the family but that's his number for the nurse's office no I was saying class then when they sent him home at the end of the day do they have to be cleared still when I come back and if they're not clear when I come back home yeah I have to check Global policy so we would have to look if we made changes legal overrides local I would have to look and see if it if it's a board policy or if it's just like a guy that's two different things that the policy would have to come to the board for changes would just be updated how do you feel we're at the point honestly we're talking about this a few years ago I've just going with the keep a big hug to be honest we kept it because we were worried about the babies because there has been some kids that have come to me I will never forget him to me at the end of the day before summer break and wanted me to check their head and when I did I don't know why but we're fixing to get on the bus it's early release is last day of school but they said but I hurt and this child was had a massive infection on your scalp it was it broke my heart I was very angry for the child oh no that wasn't that was a thing that was taken further so we held on to that because we wanted we thought we were protecting them but really we're we're not we're not anyway and say I'm hurting sure but as far as our local policy just says school nurse administrator who discovers becomes aware that child enrolled in a district elementary school has why she'll provide written or electronic notice appearances in the time frames for wall follow that long typically that's what happens a lot of times our locals will just refer back to The Loft and here it says for elementary only we only see are younger kids what does that look like the information when you're having to notify what does that mean was it gave our policy gave what does ice look like how to treat it gave references to look up from the CDC and all that kind of his general information nursing the the nursing newsletter and that's what we did make sure your child you know whatever I just went home and then Elementary Weekly Newsletter when you talk to these other districts that said we wait till the end of the day did they give you any like the they seen more more kids with lies or you know what I mean like letting them go ahead and say are they having any more problems because they're going ahead and let them say they didn't expand the lack of me asking done and that kind of  when you haven't talked about you say hey this is how it works just because they don't go sit in the office all that you I mean if anything hopefully it'll start reinforcing the hula hoop when you talk to him about a tease and things like that you could add that to your training fee what is their headlights water is our policy that's what looks like these are some things you can do in your classroom to educate students and if you do. Ashley every week put some little parents are reading it and then when they're notified as a an outbreak they might go back at those true that before how do I do that the little nothing nothing is it does we're following the law that sounds like really we're not we have 40 sending them home early I got to go meet that says so we wouldn't have to go to the ER for change it we don't because it says here I know I'm working on there and do it right now looking over the health policy and I know there's a section in there about head lice. it talks about the life wolf adopt a policy going to do today and then that we must give electric notice and if you go to local or local policy it says when I read the last part says the tool shop around Ritenour Electronica's appearances in the time price for scrubs all off that's it heading home treatment did that were sitting notice and then on the legal it talk about what the notice should include can we do that it it says it should include the parent of a child has lice as soon as practical but no later than 48 hours after the nurse through his trailer to terms with the fact that they have life the pair of each child assigned to the same classroom as a child has lice not later than the fifth day that we have to go it may not identify the remind please have to do it happy birthday but if not they have a place they get home ballpark figure how many days do we get out of there a limit to Illinois honestly week before last night game who's on the length of the hair in that cup thing and we checked the sibling and that was okay and then when she came back for recheck she was so positive mom I wanted another voucher and I said okay do you have Medicaid yet why don't you call the doctor and she said I already have he said it's over the counter but you know you get into you know the parents treat routine and you know you build up a resistance to the medication just like you build up a resistance to antibiotic if you take it often so you know that's that's an issue but we resist sometimes stronger we have now it's a new medicated shampoo and it actually could we actually went to on their nursing conference they there was somebody there from the company in West Helena so about it and that it they said it and I said a lot of times you know that say that they will it done that this will have to take them that's about it we're always going to fight that fortunately but what can we do to create a safe environment with their learning isn't disrupted their singled out an education it's unfortunate because it is frustrating and we would like to be a campus principal and teacher and and it was it sounds like we're all in agreement that these kids that needs to be end of the day so that's why we wanted to come and talk and get everybody opinion because we have felt it for a while if we wanted to make a change but we know it's going to raise some hackles but you know there's a law when they do well and then you can spend all that money and take maybe and then they go home and get some baby and play bad you know they are there mark most really going on with him treat my kids are going to have it just like any kind of weather is that this winter whatever you're going to have a few and that's when you say this is the education code this is what it says you're sticking to that we have you do it whenever we would get Aaron parents that would be you know we're actually going above and what the law says and that didn't help but now we're going to leave now we can stay well soon before he would not he would not they were going to wear four picture and he you know what time and I'll confirm that okay with our potassium that's the way it reads as long as we follow that law start next year with this new policy or right away or you have me all confirmed that with y'all better babysitter what happens on a Thursday where to Macy's bug it's 10 in the morning and gets it down and they're sent home not only are they missing lunch and everything at school they just missed them so much that can impact Buy and then you know you have things.
