Sandy Dickerson, Support Staff of the Year Nominee at D.C. Cannon

I get to unload and greet our students every morning, regardless of the weather. I love being one of the first ones to start their day with a smile and positive word. My position as a teacher's assistant is very rewarding. I am fortunate to work with a great teacher, Wendy Harsin, and we make an awesome team. We're known as the Dynamic Duo! We work together teaching our kids the importance of exercise while playing educational games and activities. I am an associate member of TAHPERD (Texas Association of Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance). I have been a part of many presentations at annual state conventions, representing Quinlan ISD. I have assisted in putting on in-service training and workshops for the surrounding districts and for districts in East Texas.

I oversee the Math Olympics committee at DC Cannon Elementary. Math Olympics is a long-standing tradition at our campus. I make sure all of the stations are prepared, high school volunteers are in place, and the prizes and awards are ready. In addition, I am in charge of the campus yearbook committee. I collect the order forms and make sure all of the receipts are distributed accordingly. I compile the picture files and basically put the yearbook together online.

Other daily duties include overseeing lunch for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. If you've never experienced it, it's a daily adventure.  At the end of the day, I call names and load cars in the heat, cold, rain, or snow. I have been with the district for 21 years. I am teaching a second generation of students. It melts my heart to hear the parents say, "She taught me in school!" I cannot think of a more rewarding job than working in QISD.
